A Half Black American Filipina Reflects on a Lifetime of Challenges and Strength

Growing up as an Amerasian child in the Philippines wasn't easy for Marcellia.
Born to a Black American father from California and a Filipina mother, she spent much of her life navigating prejudice, financial hardship, and family struggles while raising five children of her own.
During our interview, she spoke openly about her childhood, losing contact with her father, and the resilience that has carried her through decades of challenges.
"Black is beautiful."
Her story is one of perseverance and identity.
Growing Up Without Her Father
Marcellia explained that her father was a Black American who had served in the military and was originally from California.
Although she remembers seeing him as a very young child, she lost contact with him when she was around five or six years old.
Raised primarily by her mother and grandparents, she grew up without the opportunity to truly know her father.’
Despite that absence, she always remained proud of her heritage.
Facing Discrimination Because of Her Skin Color
One of the most emotional parts of the interview centered on discrimination.
She described being teased throughout childhood because of her dark skin and naturally curly hair.
Classmates mocked her appearance, and even some extended family members struggled to accept her because of her mixed-race background.
Over time, however, she learned to embrace who she was.
Instead of hiding her identity, she proudly described herself as an Amerasian and encouraged others to appreciate diversity rather than judge it.
Building a Family Through Difficult Times
Life brought many unexpected turns.
Marcellia became a mother at a young age and eventually raised five children through years of financial hardship and changing circumstances.
Some relationships ended, while others were affected by larger historical events, including the closure of

businesses after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo.
Despite these setbacks, her priority remained providing for her children and later helping care for her grandchildren.
Life After Success and Setbacks
At one point, Marcellia experienced greater financial stability through a small business.
However, changing circumstances eventually forced her to start over.
Today, she faces uncertainty again as her community deals with relocation concerns and the possible loss of the home where she currently lives.
Even so, she continues focusing on supporting her family and maintaining hope for better days ahead.
Proud of Her Heritage
Throughout the interview, one message remained consistent.
Marcellia refused to let prejudice define her life.
She acknowledged the discrimination she experienced but also spoke with pride about being part of two cultures.
She believes confidence comes from accepting yourself rather than seeking approval from others.
Her story is a reminder that identity is something to celebrate, not hide.
A Legacy of Strength
Marcellia has experienced hardship across several generations.
Yet she continues looking forward instead of backward.
